Mr. Vivek Chitre (MS, FRCSEd, FRCS, MFSTEd ) is a Consultant Surgeon at the James Paget University Hospital and at the Spire Norwich Hospital, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Norwich Medical School. He is a specialist in Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery. He consults privately at the East Point Consulting Rooms & at Spire Norwich Hospital. He carries out operations at the James Paget University Hospital, where private patients are admitted to the Charnwood Suite, and at the Spire Norwich Hospital.

Mr. Chitre mainly carries out Laparoscopic (keyhole), Gastrointestinal and Bariatric (weight-loss) surgery.  Common operations include laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gall bladder), laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (operations to cure acid reflux) and weight-loss surgery. Mr. Chitre offers keyhole surgery for all types of hernias. This includes inguinal & femoral (groin) hernias, incisional hernias (hernias occurring after previous operations) and hiatus hernias.

His special interest is in Gastro-Oesphageal Reflux Disease (GORD), hiatus hernias and incisional hernias.

Patients for weight loss surgery can be initially assessed at the East Point Consulting Rooms, but are then transferred to Spire Norwich Hospital for their pre-operative work-up, where they benefit from a multi-disciplinary team with over 10 years’ experience:
In addition to these special interests, Mr. Chitre is experienced in a wide range of general surgery. He also carries out diagnostic gastroscopy in the investigation of upper gastrointestinal disorders.

Mr. Chitre is an Examiner for the MRCS examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is the College Regional Surgical Advisor for Norfolk. He is a PBL Tutor and honorary senior lecturer at the Norwich Medical School (UEA). He is a member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, and is involved in the training of both undergraduate & postgraduate medical trainees. His research interests include GORD, paraoesophageal hernia and incisional hernia. Within the James Paget Hospital, he is the Surgical Lead for a National Audit of Emergency Laparotomies (major emergency abdominal operations) and for a National study that aims to improve outcomes after major emergency surgery (EPOCH trial)
